DPS Shooting Sparks Police Brutality Conversations

Yuliana Quiroz April 16, 2019

EDINBURG – A normal day on campus can sometimes bring the unexpected.

“But the whole situation was just crazy,” said one UTRGV student.

Last week the UTRGV students in Edinburg didn’t expect the nearby shooting of DPS trooper Moises Sanchez.

“I was having a friends barbecue night, we were all just hanging out having a good time and then we got message alerts,” said Dominique Flores, a student nearby the campus at the time.

UTRGV student Isaac Martinez says he felt safe on campus the night of April 6th, but when he saw something go wrong, he posted on the UTRGV Students Facebook page saying “If you’re on campus, go home.”

Chief Munguia tells us the suspect was never near the UTRGV Edinburg campus, but they were called to send out notifications after a person looking like the now accused, Victor Alejandro Godinez, was spotted.

“Someone here on the campus saw somebody wearing a hoodie and called it in as a person matching the description, so that caused the response to the UTRGV campus,” said Munguia.

The suspect was apprehended later that night, but the whole event sparked a bigger conversation on social media.

One person shared her thoughts via Facebook saying “a cop was just shot in edinburg hell yeah cheers homies let’s hope for 20 more”

And in another post stating “sad how many people care more about a dead cop than they do about the millions of lives that have been lost and ruined in their hands,”
