DHR Ends Teaching Agreement With UTRGV

Jessica Amaya October 27, 2022

EDINBURG- The Doctors Hospital at Renaissance announced the ending of a teaching site affiliation agreement with UTRGV after seven years of partnership.

The Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance notified Governor Greg Abbott’s office about ending the affiliation agreement for residency and fellowship programs on October third and then proceeded to inform UTRGV a week after.

An email was sent to students by UTRGV president Guy Bailey on October 12, stating this was no surprise to the university.

“This latest development is part of UTRGV’S natural evolution and undoubtedly reflects the fact that our healthcare mission no longer aligns with a for-profit, physician-owned health system like DHR health,” said Bailey.

A press release by DHR stated, “Our decision to terminate the affiliation agreement is solely based upon our requirement that all residents and fellows educated at DHR health receive the highest quality education by the appropriate experienced faculty located on our campus.”

“It’s important to know that all of those programs are fully accredited through their completion, and they will be after that because they are our programs, and they’ll go wherever we assign them,” said Bailey related to the 135 residents at DHR who will not be affected by this transition.

The partnership will continue for the next three years until the current residents graduate.

New students will be transferred to another facility after this period.
