EDINBURG – February is Black History Month—in honor of the African American culture and its history, we take a look at some places commemorating African Americans in different ways.
The Restlawn Cemetery has been open for more than 90 years and is one of the segregated cemeteries in the Rio Grande Valley.
“We should never forget where we come from or what has transpired from the people that were here before us. We can make sure that we acknowledge them because if we don’t nobody will” said Bishop Michael Smith.
Village in the Valley is working with the Restlawn Cemetery to help uncover people’s histories, unify families and connect cultures in the Rio Grande Valley.
The Museum of South Texas History is also dedicating exhibits for Black History Month with a spotlight exhibit featuring the life of respected resident of Edinburg, Otis Bell.
