A trinket trading box arrives on the Brownsville campus

Perla Cortez April 22, 2026

BROWNSVILLE – The Brownsville campus bus stop has become a hotspot for on-coming students to trade trinkets through a trust system.

The 956 Trinket Box Is a small box for students to trade a variation of small objects such as bracelets, key chains, small jewelry and other trinkets.

Michelle Garcia, an early childhood education senior and creator of the box, said the inspiration came from a social media trend and by popular demand since multiple users across the UTRGV Students Facebook page shared interest in a trinket trading box.

“You could just donate a trinket, take 1, and I just wanted everyone to kind of experience the feeling of getting that serotonin of a new trinket without having to actually buy one,” Garcia said. “Right away you had all the comments of people asking where it’s at and that they were super excited to see it.”

Garcia added, after the installation of the trinket box, multiple students shared positive feedback online. She shared that the box was not originally intended for the UTRGV campus but to Brownsville residents.

However, her sister convinced Garcia to offer the opportunity to UTRGV students at the Brownsville campus bus stop.

“[I] wasn’t thinking the bus stop, and I was like, ‘what better place? I mean, everyone passes by there,’” Garcia said. “We actually ended up hanging it up with some bungee cords that I found in my backyard. So, everything that is in that trinket box, was in my house. We didn’t have to buy anything so that’s even better.”

The trinket box is expected to stay at the bus stop where students can trade through trust.
