RIO GRANDE VALLEY – UTRGV officials are in the process of developing an AI policy for the university. A potential liberty to open for students to use AI tools on campus.
KVAQ-TV spoke with UTRGV community members to see how AI tools are being used in college.
Jerald Hughes, associate dean for undergraduate studies of the Robert C. Vackar college of business, said he uses software coded by AI to create programs to use in courses to replace quizzes.
Hughes said AI can be helpful in tasks as it allowed him to create codes that would have taken years to learn.
“I use it to code all the time because it speeds up the things that I want to do. It makes it possible for me to cross a threshold where I would have done this thing in the past, if only I had two years of spare time,” Hughes said.
He also said since students can use AI to easily answer quizzes, programs like his games ensure students are familiar with the course material.
Giovanni Melendez, cyber security freshman, said she uses AI to summarize content for her classes.
“It’s a great help for me, as a student with ADHD. It could give me short summaries on articles and very fast information that I could process using,” Melendez said.
On the contrast, students such as Ethan Navarro, electrical engineering junior, who does not use AI, said he is disappointed with the use of AI.
“My biggest disappointment about AI is that how unregulated it is, how underutilized it is, how poorly managed and used it is,” Navarro said.
According to Hughes, university faculty and staff members will meet in spring to provide information and recommendations about AI at UTRGV.
