UTRGV Facility Musicians Perform at Chamber Recital

Julia Guerrero October 4, 2023

EDINBURG– UTRGV School of Music Faculty performed in a chamber recital last Monday. The ensemble may have been a small group, but they made a big sound at the performing arts complex in Edinburg. The faculty group included Soprano, Professor Rebecca Coberly and Baritone, Professor Daniel Hunter-Holly as well as Professor Cynthia Cripps, Assistant Professor Nicaulis Ailley-Rodriguez and Lecturer Stacy Kwak who played the saxophone, flute and piano respectively.

The group performed a variety of classical and choral songs from composers Stephen Foster, Lori Laitman and more. Coberly, Hunter-Holly and Kwak gave a comedic break in the classical arrangement with their performance of “If You’ve Only Got a Mustache,” by Stephen Foster.

According to Rebecca Coberly, Associate Director of the school of music and professor of voice, the group had fewer rehearsals than they would have liked but it is part of the process when you have faculty based on both campuses.

“So, the collaboration is a big part of what musicians do and collaborations are a big part of what we as a faculty do. And so having the opportunity to do collaborations like that are really sourced in what we all grew to love starting this profession is extremely valuable I know to me,” Coberly said.

Coberly said she felt the performance went well but the real measure of how a performance goes is based on how much fun the audience has.

The next performance for the Faculty Chamber Recital will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the TSC Performing Arts Center in Brownsville.
