EDINBURG- The UTRGV Volleyball team completed a season sweep last Monday, October 10. The vaqueros defeated the three-time defending western athletic conference champions, New Mexico State, in five sets.
The Aggies started off set one strong taking a four-to-one lead, but the Vaqueros managed to respond with a 10-3 run of their own. Down 12-13, graduate student Sarah Cruz scored a kill that led the Vaqueros to a seven-to-one run, putting them out of reach.
After dropping back-to-back close sets to the Aggies, the Vaqueros came back in set four-tying the match two to two, leaving it all on the line in the fifth set. A late five-o run by the Vaqueros ended the match. Volleyball Head Coach Todd Lowery shared his thoughts on the game.
“Just the way the girls played, when it got to the fifth set, at that point. the way they responded at the fourth. I was happy with what was going to happen. As long as they continued to play the way they played in the fourth and I thought they just found a way. you know and we really challenged them,” said Lowery
After five intense sets, the Vaqueros are now seven-and-o at home for the second time in program history, matching its 2017 record. The Vaqueros are looking forward to staying undefeated as they are on a quest to win the Western Athletic Conference Championship.
