UTRGV Theatre Department Creating PPE

Rocio Villalobos April 14, 2020

EDINBURG – On top of her coursework, senior theatre student Cassandra Guajardo dedicates five hours a week to making face shields for healthcare workers at UTRGV’s COVID-19 testing sites.

She and other theatre students, along with staff, took on the project the weekend before testing began upon learning of the shortage of personal protective equipment.

And though they’re no longer able to work together on campus, they continue crafting masks, face shields and gowns remotely.

“We’re actually still doing it,” she said. “I’m working from home right now. My boss has dropped off some of the plastic sheets and stuff I need to continue to make the masks.”

The theatre group figured out how to craft the PPE’s with materials they had and now Guajardo says she can complete one face shield every five minutes.

“It has the strap from the head,” she said. “It will contort and bend with the face.”

With no end to the pandemic in sight, Guajardo says she is committed and will continue volunteering her time to create the shields for as long as they’re needed.
