McALLEN – An exhibit featuring art from Latin American nations has been added to the International Museum of Art and Science’s permanent collection.
The Mexican and Latin American folk art exhibit opened earlier this year after the museum received a grant from the national endowment for the arts and the Raul Tijerina Jr. Foundation.
Local artist Anne Moore has a collection on display, and other pieces, including masks, sculptures and metal art, come from Mexican states, Peru and other Latino countries.
The Director of Education tells us the art from each region has distinct characteristics.
“Folk art originally is made from regional communities that use materials they can access easily, such as clay, metal, for example, is really popular, wood, and so you’ll see a lot of carving and weaving. and these practices are passed on through generations,” said IMAS Director of Education Claudia Martinez.
IMAS adds it intends to keep the exhibit up for two to five years.
