It’s the final day of September, or even October depending on when you’re watching this. So, it’s time to change the calendar. Let’s go see what sport we’re going to cover first here. Hey, that’s weird. Oh look at that. It’s Men’s Soccer.
UTRGV got conference play kicked off against WAC opponent UNLV. The Vaqueros got the scoring started in the first four minutes with Senior Angel Lopez connecting on a corner kick. UTRGV would extend their lead just nine minutes later thanks to Freshman Juan Rivera. Offense wasn’t the only story though. Just look at this magnificent save from Senior Andy Rios. Plays like that would hold UTRGV on for the 2-0 victory.
For Women’s Soccer it’s been either feast or famine this year. In their first five victories they outscored opponents 14-0 but in their three losses they’ve been outscored 10-0. Well, we saw a similar story this last weekend. Only question is, which way would the games swing?
The Vaqueras got things started this weekend against the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs. Scoring opened in the first two minutes with Senior Amanda Lozano notching her first career goal. Two more players, Katherine Stokely and Anna Torslov, added their first career goals as well. Everyone got in on the action. Jaquiline Zapata says “Hey Bulldog” and gets one as well. In the end, it was UTRGV taking the win 5-0.
Here’s what Lozano and Torslov had to say about their first career goals.
As usual, let’s close things out with volleyball. UTRGV headed west to open up WAC play. The Vaqueras started off hot against Seattle U. Three sets was all they needed as UTRGV won 3-0. Sophomore Sarah Cruz led the team with 15 kills. The team headed to Utah to face the Utah Valley Wolverines. UTRGV took the first two sets thanks to, who else, Cruz and Senior Barbara Silva. But, the game was not over there. Utah Valley came from down 2-0 to put on an impressive comeback by winning the final three sets.
Volleyball stays on the road this weekend to face New Mexico State and California Baptist.
