Edinburg- Another win for the UTRGV Chess Team!
It was a back-to-back win at the Big Apple.
Last week, they celebrated their victory on both campuses.
Students and faculty were invited to celebrate with the team.
The team dominated the final round beating six-time champion Webster University.
“Fantastic we can defend the national championship title and prove that our success last year wasn’t accidental,” said Bartek Macieja, UTRGV Chess Coach.
UTRGV-TV asked the one of the grandmasters how they started with their first game of chess.
“My neighbor went to local chess club, and I had nothing to do, and I won my first game and it encouraged me to continue. I started when I was five,” said Vladimir Belous, Chess Grandmaster.
President Bailey was ecstatic about their win, and says they are the role models for the university.
