BROWNSVILLE – Breaking bad actor and local Brownsville celebrity RJ Mitte died on Monday Oct. 12 from suicide.
He gave opportunities to people in the Valley through community initiatives and scholarship programs.
He was known as a philanthropist, arts patron and disability rights advocate.
Aron Cortez, creative director of the UTRGV Student Film Association, talks about Mitte’s effect on the Brownsville community. “He inspired all of us to actually do something,” Cortez said. “It’s like, ‘Oh he’s from Brownsville. We can do something to too.’ We’re not a small border town. We’re not just that and we are so much more.”
Brownsville held a memorial event for him last Friday where he was remembered for his lasting impact on the community.
