Soccer, volleyball, and a preview of a third sport. We have them all lined up for you today but where do we start?
UTRGV hosted New Mexico State in a WAC showdown. The Vaqueros put up a great effort but it was no match for the Aggies, who are undefeated in conference play this season. UTRGV kept it close in the First Set but New Mexico State closed out that one with a win and won the next two as well to take the match 3-0.
There are four more games left for them to get momentum heading into the WAC Tournament. Now, ties are pretty awesome. Speaking of ties we have a lot of them right here and a couple to talk about. We also have one that actually relates to our next sport.
UTRGV Men’s Soccer got this weekend started against San Jose State. Both teams came into this one on the bubble to make it to the Western Athletic Conference tournament. Not a lot of offensive action in this one but we did see some physicality. 29 fouls between the two schools that resulted in 5 yellow cards. Now, big deal, right? Well considering across all 204 NCAA Division 1 schools, UTRGV was in last in fouls per game and in yellow cards. San Jose State isn’t far behind, ranking 6th in foul proficiency. So the fact that these teams racked up so many fouls is pretty astonishing. In the end, those were the only notable stats as this one ended 0-0.
The same result looked possible against Seattle U. The Vaqueros and Redbirds held each other out of the net for the first 80 minutes until Seattle’s James Morris scored the game-winning penalty kick to give his team the win.
The Top 7 teams qualify for the WAC tournament and UTRGV sits at 7th. A win against the last-place Incarnate Word Cardinals would push them into the tourney.
Another sport though, is already ready for tournament play.
Women’s Soccer closed out the regular season at home against New Mexico State. The Aggies got things started early with a Corey Kizer goal. The Vaqueros equaled the mark in the Second Half with a strike from Emily Zapata. The Aggies would put the game away, though, later in the game to win this one 3-1.
The team wraps up the year on a three-game losing streak but are seeded 5th for the WAC tournament and will open the postseason against CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday.
While they are wrapping things up, Basketball is just about to tee off. Tonight, UTRGV Men’s basketball faces South Dakota State and Women’s Basketball takes on Texas Southern. If you keep up with UTRGV Student Media on Facebook you’ll see our picks for the games this week.
