EDINBURG – UTRGV Volleyball’s first game ended in a 3-1 loss last Friday. KVAQ-TV interviewed two of the players beforehand to speak on how they prepared for the 2025 season.
Nadine Zech, junior outside hitter, has been on the volleyball team for the past three years. She said the team has been working on improving last season’s shortcomings.
“I think this year what we’re going to do is those things that we couldn’t do that time,” Zech said. “We’re going to do it right now and during this season and this weekend.”
Sujeli Mermella, junior setter and defensive specialist, previously played for Saint John’s University for two years before transferring to UTRGV. As a newcomer, Mermella said adjusting to the team has been really easy, but she does think the team can work on its “togetherness.”
“The girls are super welcoming; the coaches as well. It’s a competitive environment,” Mermella said. “We each have really good individual talents but bringing it together is going to be the most important part.”
The team’s skills will be put to the test once more as they gear up for the first home game of the season at 6:30 p.m. today against Texas State University at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
