EDINBURG- The UTRGV Men’s Basketball team defeated St. Francis last Monday, 77 to 51.
A strong start from the Vaqueros in the first half pushed them past the Fighting Saints extending their lead 26 to six.
St. Francis answered back with a seven-run to close out the vaqueros lead with four minutes and a half remaining at first.
The Vaqueros ended the first half leading 41 to 18.
In the second half, the Fighting Saints responded to the vaqueros as the defense set pressure, but were no match as the Vaqueros secured the win 77 to 51.
“I thought we played really well, I thought we had a lot of respect for coach mark’s team. Our guys were locked and focused in the first half, with our effort defensively, I thought that we didn’t play enough well offensively to extend the lead the way I wanted to,” said Head Coach Matt Figger.
The UTRGV Women’s Basketball team won their home opener last Tuesday against the University of Northern Colorado Bears.
After four intense four quarters, sophomore Iyana Dorsey led the Vaqueros with a career-high of 27 points.
The Vaqueros started off with a slow start and ended the first quarter 13 to 14.
After coming off halftime, the vaqueros struggled in the third quarter but were able to open gaps to allow the shooters to score, ending the third quarter down five points.
Down in the fourth quarter, Guard Halie Jones came with big shots to keep the vaqueros on top.
Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Lane Lord talked about the competitive matchup, “It’s a what you call a grinder. We really struggled to score the basketball. We had very few shots made in the first half. it was a great team win; it was ugly at times the way we were shooting the basketball.”
