UTRGV – The Military and Veteran Success Center, University Recreation and Army ROTC partnered up to commemorate 9/11 with multiple events on Sept. 8 and 11 at the Edinburg, Brownsville and Harlingen campuses.
Starting with a 5K Commemorative Run to remember those killed and honor the heroes who put their own lives at risk to save others. The Run happened in both the Brownsville campus last Friday and the Edinburg campus Monday, Sept. 11. The Harlingen campus also hosted a moment of silence and placement of the flags at noon at the flagpole.
Fay Kennan, University Recreation fitness and wellness coordinator, said the events happened before on a smaller scale but this is the first year the departments collaborated to host them.
“It’s a very important day for a lot of individuals, it hit everybody in a different manner. At some point, no matter where you were in the world this was a very impactful event,” Kennan said. “Therefore, we want to honor those people who were running in when everybody was running out.”
As of Sept. 7, there were 145 registrations for the Edinburg campus and 36 for the Brownsville campus.
