EDINBURG- The UTRGV Baseball program is ready for the 2023 season. Before the start of the season, the program upgraded its facility, added some details to the field, and recruited more players to help the program.
This is not the first time the UTRGV Baseball program receives upgrades, head baseball coach Derek Matlock says said the university has previously helped the program improve.
“They’ve done a lot for us every year, since I’ve been here there’s been something. From cages to brand new infield grass, to paint, pads on the walls, and decks. I think there’s been something every year that’s kind of helped the program grow and get better,” said
Matlock says facilities play a big role in recruitment, and hopefully these upgrades will bring some of the best players in the country to UTRGV.
Upgrades to the facility include lockers with padded seating and USB chargers, a ventilation system integrated into the lockers, and a UTRGV logo at its center.
Matlock shared he hopes the valley comes and supports the players this season
“I think they will have a lot of fun at the games. I think the kids deserve to play in front of a big crowd they’ve worked their butts off, from 6 a.m. weights to playing summer ball in the country. It’d be nice to have the valley come and support,” said Matlock.
February 17 is the UTRGV Baseball team’s first match against the Houston Baptist Huskies in Edinburg.
