EDINBURG– Building on the success of last season’s ‘Frankenstein’ sell-out UTRGV is kicking off its production season with ‘The Haunting of Hill House’.
The 64-year-old classic horror drama by Shirley Jackson aligns with its opening month theme—spooky October. With its fusion of classic horror, psychological intrigue, and dedicated performances, this production promises to cast an irresistible spell on theatergoers, introducing a season of captivating drama and spine-tingling suspense.
Stepping into the behind-the-scenes spotlight, stage manager Karina Molina said the production crew is working on fine-tuning the details.
“Right now, really what we are doing or what I have been seeing is more design wise. So, designers already have their set designs their costume designs, their sound designs so that’s really what’s in preparation right now” Molina said.
Theater major Ashley Cantu who plays Eleanor in the production said she studied the original book in preparation for the role.
“I was reading the book and the script at the same time, being like ok here are the similarities, here are the differences, this is what I want to do with my character” Cantu said.
Criminal justice major Chelsea Martinez said she refused to watch the film version to give her character, Theodora, her own flair.
“I don’t want to see some young women playing Theodora on the screen and suddenly I’m copying her stuff while I’m rehearsing for her” Martinez said.
According to Cantu ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ goes beyond being just a chill down your spine – it’s something more.
“There is a little bit of everything in there, haunting of hill house is more like a psychological type of horror” Cantu Said.
The haunting of hill house” directed by associate professor Brian Warren premiers October 20 and will run for two weekends in the albert l. Jeffers theater at UTRGV.
