The Federal Communications Commission has adopted 988 as the new suicide prevention lifeline effective July 16.
Sason Tavakoli-Sabour, UTRGV Assistant Professor for the Department of Psychiatry said that this new lifeline will make it easier for people to reach out.
“In 2019, suicide was the 10th largest cause of death in the United States, the opportunity of having this 988 number, it will be a quick and easy way to have access if you’re in crisis,” said Tavakoli-Sabour.
