Texan actors push for an increase in film production within the state

Perla Cortez February 19, 2025

EDINBURG – Last month, Matthew McConaughey posted a statement on X which said, “Texas stories should have Texas backdrops.” Attached to the post was a short film promoting the message; starring Texan actors such as Woody Harrelson and Dennis Quaid.

The short film, titled True to Texas, aims to bring more film productions within the state by highlighting the incentives for doing so.

In the description of the short film, it says, “Filming in Texas isn’t just about showcasing our stunning landscapes—it’s about creating jobs, boosting local economies, and building a thriving industry right here at home”

Jose Castro, a student at UTRGV and Vice President for the Student Film Association, said that he has noticed many shows or films are shot in various states besides Texas that revolve around Hispanic culture.

“There’s shows like On My Block where like, yeah, they tell the story of like the Mexican Americans, but it’s kind of like it feels fabricated,” Castro said. “I think the stories here that are to be told are very interesting and the ones that should be in the public’s eye that we have so much, we have so many things going on.”

The South Texas International Film Festival is a competition in Edinburg that aims to push the film industry for the Rio Grande Valley.

An event that invites students, abroad filmmakers and local industries to partake in a chance to receive recognition for their creative words and obtain an award.

This year will be STXFF’s 11th convention.

Visit stxiff.com for more information to sign up for the competition.
