UTRGV – The UTRGV Baseball team went face to face against the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders this past weekend. Starting with Friday the team scored three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth and ended the game with a score of 11-1.
Senior Conrado Diaz led the Vaqueros (7-7) by going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Senior Coleman Grubbs went 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs. Senior Christian Sepulveda went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Senior Elijah Alexander finished 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Jacob Flores came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with two RBI.
On Saturday the team scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 19-0 victory and came back later that day for game two and led an 8-0 victory. The Vaqueros have now won six times in a row. Leading the Vaqueros Junior Tyler Kisner gave the Vaqueros a career-high 10 strikeouts in a career-high seven scoreless innings for this game giving Vaqueros the win. The baseball team ended the four-game series with a 10-2 victory over NJIT.
Now moving on to basketball, the Vaqueros are on their way to place No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament- the highest seeding in program history.
The team went on to play against the California Baptist University Lancers on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Graduate student Jordan Jackson led the Vaqueros with 24 points, three assists and two blocks. Senior Lesley Varner II scored 22 points with a career-high seven steals, tied for the 10th-highest single-game total in program history. Junior Javon Levi scored eight points with a career-high-tying 13 assists, a season-high-tying five steals, and five rebounds. Senior Isaiah Fontaine finished with five points with four rebounds.
After going 8-2 in its final 10 games, UTRGV gets closer into the WAC Tournament Quarterfinals matchup with seventh-seeded CSU Bakersfield on Thursday at 8 p.m.
The winner will face either No. 3 Seattle U or No. 6 Utah Valley in the semifinals on Friday at 10:30 on ESPN+. The championship game is set for Saturday at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
