The Western Athletic Conference has confirmed they are canceling all remaining sports spring competitions. The COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to cancel all sports organizations in order to reduce the number of people becoming infected with the virus. The welfare of student-athletes has always been UTRGV’s first priority and the process of deciding to continue the season was a major concern.
Seniors who are unable to play for their last year are also questioning whether they are able to play for another season or if their college careers are over. The Western Athletic Conference Basketball tournament in Las Vegas was canceled, which caused the men to miss the opportunity to compete for the WAC title.
Baseball was also affected by the pandemic.
The UTRGV Baseball team was one of just three teams in the NCAA to turn a triple play this season. The Vaqueros also ranked 12th in the nation in shutdowns ending this baseball season short on an eight-game winning streak with an 11-7 record.
Other sports such as golf, tennis, and track ended their seasons.
The men’s golf team finished in the top five of its seven tournaments with the season coming off a victory at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational, one of two wins for the team this season.
The women’s golf team completes its season coming off its best finish of the year, placing fourth at the UTRGV Invitational and placing eighth in three tournaments.
The men’s tennis team ends its season on a three-match winning
streak and went 6-4 over its final 10 contestants.
The women’s tennis came to a close after UTRGV won its final home match, 7-0 over Laredo Community College.
The track and field team completed the indoor season Feb. 29th with nine WAC Championships.
