MISSION – After a local judge lifted a lawsuit brought upon Fisher industries by the National Butterfly Center claiming the company’s construction of a border wall would violate the United States and Mexico’s Boundary Treaty, the company has resumed its project of a 3-mile wall on private property in Mission.
The Cavazos’ family own 70 acres of land adjacent to the new wall and say although they will be affected, they were never informed on the company plans to build a wall.
“These folks didn’t even tell us they were going to do this wall,” said Reynaldo Anzalduas, a cousin of the landowners.”And there’s very little recourse we have until they do the damage.”
The private wall is just yards away from their property and the family fears several of the lots they rent will be ruined by flooding due to the construction.
“it’s gonna cause problems because it’ll accelerate the flow of water and it’s going to eat part of our property here,” Anzalduas said.
Apart from the impact it’ll have on their land, Anzalduas and his family are against what they believe the wall stands for.
“Who would build a wall and a border other that somebody who fears somebody and hates somebody?”
They say their neighbors also oppose the wall.
“Most of us here in this area don’t want walls, yet we’re getting walls,” Anzalduas said. “Look what happened to the Berlin Wall. It got torn down. This will be no different.”
The project is costing the company more than $40 million and is estimated to be complete by the end of the month.
While it’s privately funded and the money is not coming out of taxpayers pockets, Jose Alfredo Cavazos says the millions would be better spent elsewhere.
“This is money that’s going to waste and I hope they open up their hearts and give this money to the people that really need it,” he said.
Although the private builders haven’t made an offer to buy their land to continue the construction, the Cavazos’ say if that day comes there’s no amount of money they would accept to part with the property that has been in their family for generations.
