Phase One of Promenade Park Opens

Jessica Amaya November 2, 2022

EDINBURG- The City of Edinburg completed the first phase of three projects, a 26-million-dollar downtown investment passed last August.

A new Amphitheatre opened to the public on October 21st and is expected to provide many live night events in downtown Edinburg.

Juan Garcia, pro tem mayor said the Multi-Culture Arts Department had a vision about 15 years ago of creating a project where Sam Houston Elementary School used to be.

A project was passed on August 18, 2021, to provide a better quality of life in Edinburg.

Edinburg Economic Development Corporation President, Veronica Gonzalez shares that the City of Edinburg has been growing and the corporation wanted to create more opportunities.

“The great cities have green spaces. They have places where everybody can share entertainment and where you have hike and bike trails, and plazas. Those are the things that draw people to cities and that is what the EDC wanted to do,” said Gonzalez.

Terry Canales, Texas State Representative, attended the grand opening of the promenade park and says the quality of life is more than just businesses across the city.

“From dance to plays to music. If music susses the savage piece, well-performing arts, it celebrates humanity and that’s what we are doing today. this is the beginning of a celebration of humanity in our community, the effects that will happen here will ripple throughout our society for generations to come,” said Canales.

The Amphitheatre and water gardens project is estimated to cost $1,250,000 dollars and phase two is estimated to cost $1,250,000. The foundation of phase two has been completed and construction is expected to begin in November.
