‘Nobody should be a victim’

Fernanda Gonzalez October 9, 2024

BROWNSVILLE —The Office of Advocacy and Violence Prevention, University Police and UT Health RGV, partnered to create a resource fair to educate students about different services for survivors amid Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Jacklyn Medrano, community education director for the Family Crisis Center, said the organization has two locations in Harlingen and in Raymondville, both serving the Cameron and Willacy counties.

“Our services include counseling service, legal assistance, legal advocacy, as well as a shelter, 24-hour shelter, our 24-hour hotline, support group,” Medrano said. “So, we are trying to break the cycle of violence.”

She said it is important to speak out, and to get the assistance needed in order for the violence cycle to end.

“Nobody should be a victim,” Medrano said.

Medrano added the services provided by the center are confidential and free.

The Family Crisis Center in Harlingen is located at 616 W. Taylor Ave. The Raymondville center is located at 192 N. Third Street.

To contact the Family Crisis Center, call 423-9305 or 689-5150 or visit familycrisisctr.org.
