EDINBURG – Texas residents, 21 and older, are now able to concealed carry firearms without a license into apartments after Governor Gregg Abbott signed the House Bill 1927. The law became effective on September 1st.
Van Slusser, Assistant Chief of Police at UTRGV said that the Campus Carry policies at UTRGV will remain unchanged. He explained that to carry a concealed handgun into campus apartments, people will need to complete a few steps.
“A permit which you have to apply for, run a background check, fingerprinting, and you have to attend a training class and then qualify that you’re proficient on firearms before you’re issued a license to carry,” said Slusser.
Sergio Martinez, Director of Housing and Residence Life at UTRGV said they will continue to have police patrolling the area, limit professional staff, security cameras, secured entrances and doorways.
