Desiree Villanueva MCALLEN- Emily’s Meals is a nonprofit organization that was founded 10 years ago by a 6-year-old girl named Emily who was curious about why homeless people don’t have a daily meal.
Emily Aguirre, the founder of Emily’s Meals, said meals are provided daily.
“We usually give up to 40 or 50 meals out a day and it’s strictly out of volunteer basis,” Aguirre said. “We just get calls texts we set up a calendar, and that’s how we work. Just volunteers.”
Emily’s Meals mark 10 years in February.
Aguirre said there are plans to expand the organization’s work.
“Right now, we are mostly based off in McAllen,” she said. “But we have people spreading out more like some Weslaco and some Harlingen and hopefully my dream is that it goes far and spreads even more to help more people, hopefully just expansion of Emily’s meals.”
Aguirre said anyone is welcome to volunteer for Emilys’ Meals.
The McAllen High School football team participated in prepping meals to donate to Emily’s Meals.
Joaquin Valdez, a McAllen High school football player, said it is important to do these services since it gives him a sense of doing something for the community.
“We get to come together as a family and kind of get some good stuff done for the community,” Valdez said.
