Gross Income & Tuition Freeze

Julia Guerrero September 14, 2023

UTRGV – The UT System Board of Regents approved a plan to freeze tuition and mandatory fees for the next two years. A university official tells KVAQ-TV this will not affect UTRGV’S gross total income.

For fiscal year 2023, UTRGV collected about 2.8 million dollars in tuition and student fees.

Patrick Gonzales, University Marketing and Communications vice president, said the tuition freeze will not precisely affect UTRGV gross total income. The gross tuition income funds the quality of education, faculty salaries, campus facilities, and student services.

“UTRGV has a plan in place called guaranteed tuition rate. So, let’s speak theoretically. If a freshman came in this year, that freshman will pay the same amount of tuition and mandatory academic fees,” Gonzales said. “That will be guaranteed for the next four years if they can graduate in the next four years. They’ll pay the rate no matter what. So, let’s say their junior year, we raise tuition and mandatory academic fees. They won’t have to pay the increase because they are protected by our guaranteed tuition program.”

The last time UTRGV had an increase in tuition and fees was in the 2021-2022 academic year.

Gonzales said the tuition freeze is great news not just for the university but for all UT System academic institutions, adding that the university has one of the lowest tuition rates in the state.
