Edinburg- You may have heard the benefits of eating organic vegan-friendly food, but do you know how and who they’re harvested by?
Meet UTRGV’s Environmental Awareness Club whose members are local farmers in the Valley.
“We have some local farmers who are members of our club so they farm their own fruits and vegetables and they’re the ones who decide what they’re going to bring to the market,” said Suzanne El-Haj, Environmental Awareness Club Contributor.
“And what they’re going to sell and they also cook certain foods they want to sell and bake certain baked goods but we also get donations from local farmers. We got out to the farms we volunteer and in exchange they give us produce so we can sell and make a profit.” said El-Haj.
The Farmers Market sold organic toothbrushes to prepped meals accessible to students and faculty as part of Valentine’s Day. Other goodies included organic baked desserts and grass-fed entrees.
The club hosts their Farmers Market once a month to supply students and faculty with healthier alternatives from their farmers but could use the extra help.
