HARLINGEN – The Family Crisis Center offers free and confidential resources to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
Martha Sanchez, Family Crisis Center Counselor, said that domestic violence doesn’t just apply to physical abuse, it can also be emotional and verbal abuse.
“They start off with the name calling, put downs, making you feel bad about yourself, blaming you for things that you didn’t even do, and a lot of it also involves gaslighting,” said Sanchez.
Sanchez explained that gaslighting is the psychological manipulation of making someone believe something that isn’t true.
She said, “It’s important to reach out to your family and friends but to also know that you have resources within the community such as centers like ours.”
Jacklyn Medrano, Family Crisis Center Community Educator, listed that the Family Crisis Center provides services such as counseling, legal advocacy, peer support, and they also have a shelter.
“We service Cameron County and Willacy County,” said Medrano.
