EDINBURG – UTRGV’s Parking and Transportation announced the extension of one of its programs waiving parking citations on Nov. 13 through Instagram.
Donations for Citations, formerly known as Kindness for Cans, allows students to pay off citations by donating canned goods, select-toiletries and hygiene products.
Items donated will be used to support the UTRGV Student Food Pantry and the Office for Advocacy and Violence Prevention’s student toiletry pantry.
To waive a citation, a total of 10 points is required. One canned food equal to one point and one toiletry equaled five points. Students can only waive one citation and its late fees.
The following items are accepted for donations:
Canned food:
– Vegetables
– Beans
– Soups
– Fruits
– Ravioli/SpaghettiOs
– Chili
– Tuna
– Chicken
– Fruit juice
– Tomato sauce
– Vienna sausages
Toiletries:
– Shampoo or conditioner (12 oz or larger; premium or hypoallergenic options)
– Body wash (12 fl oz or larger; sensitive-skin or scented options)
– Unscented body lotion (12 fl oz or larger)

– Unpaid Luke pay station/ Expired meter
Citations that CAN’T be waivered include:

– Parking in a non-parking space
– Parking in ADA or veteran-designated spaces
Railee Carvajal, a kinesiology sophomore, said that the program could motivate students for donations, especially for individuals with a lot of them.
“I guess, we get a lot of citations because people don’t want to get the parking permit and the citations just keep on adding up, because I have a friend that she does not get it, and it is a her to just buy,” said Carvajal.
Joanna Carrion, biology sophomore, said the donations will benefit other students’ needs, because of the government shutdown.
“I believe it’s a good opportunity for students to take the opportunity to donate food, especially during the government shutdown, in which a lot of families in this community have been struggling,” Carrion said. “So, I think it’s a good opportunity to donate food and donate the goods before Thanksgiving break.”
Donations for Citations will end Tuesday, Nov. 18.
