Cases Serve as Reminder of Sexual Assault Awareness

Nathaniel Puente April 16, 2019

Edinburg- College is an exciting time for any student. It’s a chance to learn and gain experiences that will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, those experiences are tainted far too often. A high number of students are sexually assaulted in college.

Two recent assault cases at UTRGV edge a grim reminder: it can happen here too.

UTRGV Chief of Police Raul Munguia spoke to us about these cases and why it’s important for students to report suspicious activity.

“Police can never be everywhere,” Munguia said. “We depend on students to be our eyes and ears and to report stuff. If you see something, say something,” he clarified.

A glance through the UTRGV PD Crime Log shows a stunning amount of harassment through texting and other forms of cyber-bullying. A common fear among assault victims is that police will not believe them.

Chief Mungia, however, guarantees that victims will be safe through the report process.

“We have an in-house victims’ advocate,” Munguia commented. “When a victim comes in to report they’ve been sexually assaulted, they’ll sit with [the victims’ advocate] first and [she] will explain to them the whole process,” he continued.

Although these cases are severe, Chief Munguia assures that UTRGV is one of the safest campuses in Texas. UTRGV PD encourages students to download the Campus Shield app for unlimited service from the police department.
