BROWNSVILLE – The land where Texas Southmost College sits has been the site of battles fought and diseases. In the late 1800’s Fort Brown was used during the Mexican American War followed by the yellow fever epidemic.
David Bowles, associate professor of literature and cultural studies said there were thousands of Mexican and Mexican American victims of the yellow fever epidemic.
“There was just no way of getting around it. It was a horrifying thing, you would take care of patients all day long and then you would go outside to dig a couple of graves so that those people that you just took care of, when they die overnight, you will have a place to put them in the morning,” said Bowles.
Daniel Sampayo, a student at TSC spoke about his possible paranormal encounters on campus. He mentioned an experience he and his friend had when on the second floor of a building.
“We were just talking and out of nowhere we saw one of the curtains go up and when we looked at it for like two or three seconds it went down ‘woosh’ like someone was looking at us and now just closed it when they saw us,” said Sampayo.
Bowles mentioned that if anyone is interested in going ghost hunting at the TSC campus at night, his only tip is to leave your car running just in case you see a ghost, you will have a quick way out.
