EDINBURG – As UTRGV undergraduates prepare for fall commencement, the university offers further steps into education for its students.
Director for Recruitment for Graduate and Medical Education Programs, Stephanie Larralde said students can apply for the graduate program online and her department can assist them if necessary.
“We have graduate recruiters who meet one to one, with prospective students and kind of guide them,” Larralde said. “So, some programs require three letters of recommendation, a resumé or a personal statement. And we’re here to kind of guide them through the process.”
UTRGV’s graduate program offers 75 master programs, 15 doctoral programs, and 46 certifications.
Larralde said master’s usually takes two years, and accelerated programs can take up to 10-months to a little over a year.
She added that a scholarship of $1,000 is offered to eligible students who meet the GPA criteria of 3.3 or higher and are enrolled in six credit hours.
Although most students in the graduate program are UTRGV alumni, Larralde said some graduate students were still undergrads before entering the program.
Computer engineering senior Edward Garza said he plans to get a master’s in electrical engineering after he graduates, but wished his advisers told him about the graduate program sooner.
“My grades wouldn’t not have been as bad as they were. They weren’t as bad, I passed every single one,” Garza said. “But I felt like for me, if [they] told [me] a little bit sooner, I would have already got the acceptance instead of, like, having to go through the whole process of it. So that’s the one big thing that’s probably for me.”
