EDINBURG – The City of Edinburg honored a former UTRGV coach with the unveiling of a new street sign at the corner of Sugar road and Schunior St. on Monday.
“Coach Al Ogletree Way” honors former University of Pan American Baseball head coach Al Ogletree, who died in 2019.
Affectionately known as Coach Al, Ogletree brought in the most wins in UTRGV Baseball’s history.
Throughout his career, Ogletree’s impact reached far beyond the field. He worked with 23 MLB Draft Picks, including three who made it to the majors and mentored 175 future coaches.
Among them, his successor Reggie Tredaway, Seattle Mariners Coach Perry Hill and former Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs Pitching Coach Jim Hickey.
Coach Al’s legacy has also been recognized across the state, as he was inducted into eight Halls of Fame, including the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame.
The sign is displayed at the intersection near the UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
