Edinburg- A Latina feminist first started a personal blog on Facebook, but she never thought she would have garnered so much attention.
“I really was not expecting it, so now it’s like this multi-platform thing that has led me to talk, like here” said Cassandra Alicia.
Cassandra began her online blog, Xicanisma, four years ago when she felt the need to speak out on things that affect Latinas and Chicanas.
Yet today, she dedicates Xicanisma on both social media accounts, Facebook and Instagram, to focus on the struggles of all marginalized groups of people.
“I think that a lot of people don’t have access to having conversations about what it means to be brown in the United States. I don’t think there’s a lot of people that feel they have support in talking about certain issues, so I think my platform is a place where people can have that and be able to have conversations with one another about these things,” said the blogger and Latina feminist.
Maintaining such a huge platform sometimes becomes overwhelming, however. Cassandra is the sole founder of Xicanisma and runs both platforms on her own.
“It’s hard because it’s a lot of emotional labor. A lot of it is emotionally exhausting, so sometimes I remove myself from it and I’ve kind of learned how to navigate that,” said Alicia.
