UTRGV Observes National Voter Registration Day

Selene Bocanegra Tizapan September 23, 2024

EDINBURG– UTRGV Center for Student Involvement hosted an event for National Voter Registration Day last Tuesday at the Quad on the Edinburg campus and in the Main Courtyard on the Brownsville campus.

Samantha Zavala, Center for Student Involvement program coordinator for Civic Engagement and Leadership, said the number of students who filled out the application to vote was 100.

In Edinburg, students were able to get registered to vote in the multiple booths available during the event.

Volunteer Deputy Registrars were on site to answer any questions or concerns students had about the application process.

Elizabeth Goldberg, associate professor of practice for the School of Integrative Biology and Chemical Sciences, said voting is one of the “most important civic duties.”

“It’s so vital to register voters because everyone should have a voice in the decisions that are made that affect all of our lives and registering voters on college campuses is important because for many of the people here, this is the first election that they’re eligible to vote,”” Goldberg said.

She said it is essential for students to start participating in democracy as soon as they’re ready.

Zavala said the engagement numbers for both campuses was over 350 students.

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 7.
