Edinburg- What better way to end the second week of early voting than holding a Rope the Vote rally at the chapel lawn. Students were invited to participate in the rally by playing games, eating pizza, and listening to music.
The Student Government Association also invited students to write down why voting matters to them on a large table poster.
The program coordinator of Student Activities says the student midterm voter turnout is just as high as the presidential election.
“It’s really encouraging to see that the students are excited about the elections. I think there’s a lot of hot topics. There’s a lot of candidates that are running that students are really excited about. It’s exciting to see students take that on,”said Lauren Contreras.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are less people in Texas that vote during midterm elections, and a great amount of registered voters who do not vote.
According to Huffington Post, Texas is among the top ten states with the lowest voter turnout.
