MCALLEN – Are you looking for a home? With the current economic recession, finding housing that fits one’s needs and budget can be difficult.
To help people take the steps to home ownership, Affordable Homes of South Texas was founded as a non-profit organization that specializes in allowing potential buyers by providing resources and informational services that would get them to that first step.
Janie Vela, a senior home-buyer advisor for AHSTI, spoke about the challenges for young adults entering the housing market.
“I think that something that is such a deterrent to young individuals is, they don’t know where to start,” said Vela. “So, the fact that we are able to educate and help you as much throughout the process I think is such a huge benefit.”
Vela stated that a major component of becoming mortgage-ready is maintaining as much financial stability as possible by taking on as little debt as possible and starting early on with a good credit score.
“Those are the two building blocks of being ready to buy a home: having savings and having a good credit history, as well as once you’re serious and ready, secure employment,” said Vela. “Finding something that you like and sticking to it would be key.”
