MISSION – The Mission Bats Facebook page and fan club is a community group dedicated to observing the most common bat in Texas: The Mexican free-tailed bat.
This species is largely migratory. According to Bat Conservation International, the bats spend the winter in caves in Mexico before flying to North Texas in February for the spring and summer. They then head back to Mexico around October or November.
Changing climate conditions and food availability have also caused some colonies to remain in parts of the Rio Grande Valley year-round, making the city of Mission their new “squeaking” grounds
Local bat enthusiast and Mission Bats community member Sonya Ramsey says watching the bats is an educational experience for the whole family — and one that may inspire children.
