Samara Flores EDINBURG – According to the UTRGV parking services department, as of the 2025-2026 school year, the Edinburg campus has 4,102 Zone Two parking spaces.
UTRGV Parking and Transportation services issued approximately 7,800 Zone Two parking permits per semester on average.
Pablo Aguilar, UTRGV director of parking services, said the increase in enrollment led parking and transportation services to open temporary “overflow” parking lots to accommodate the demand.
“Besides monitoring the lots closely, we did decide to open up temporary lots which land was available this year.” said Aguilar.
These temporary overflow parking lots work by providing alternative parking areas when the demand for parking has increased beyond the university’s capacity.
The Edinburg campus has seen two overflow lots open since the beginning of the 26-27 school year, as well as one in Brownsville, however it’s still a far walk from campus potentially discouraging students from parking here to head to classes.
Despite the university’s effort to accommodate its largest student body in history with the overflow parking, students continue to advocate for a permanent solution.
