RIO GRANDE VALLEY – UTRGV Football is only in its second season, but some students feel the sport has already left a mark on not only the campus, but the Valley as a whole.
Here’s what some students had to say.
Eleazar Yoc, kinesiology junior, said while attending a home game, he saw that love on display in the Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium.
“Everyone just came together to like, support the school, which was really nice,” Yoc said. “The student section, you know, everyone was just screaming, you know, like being in tune with the game.”
Mauricio Davila, business management freshman, said he enjoys rooting for the Vaqueros, adding that the team’s success pushes him to pursue his own.
“I like cheering for the team and like, when we, when we have big wins and when we go up ranks,” Davila said. “I like that, you know, it makes me feel motivated and stuff even in school, it kind of all goes hand-in-hand for me.”
The impact of the football team also extends outside of UTRGV and into the Valley as a whole.
Nathan Lozano, mass communication senior, said he feels the addition of the sport helped bring students and the community together.
“Well, I feel like in the Valley, football has always been a culture and we’ve just been missing that one key piece, which is a college football team,” Lozano said. “Once we got that college football team, it kind of filled that void we were missing.”
The Vaqueros finally return home this weekend going up against McNeese State Cowboys in its second conference matchup of the season.
