FAFSA’s Soft Launch Causes Concerns

Julia Guerrero January 17, 2024

EDINBURG– Many students are pressed to meet new FAFSA deadlines and changes in hopes of securing financial opportunities. The Department of Education rolled out a soft launch for the 2024-2025 FAFSA on Dec. 31, which was initially designed for the application to be completed with ease.

However, the first week of availability left students concerned. They voiced their experiences on social media which included the website being down and issues with filling out the “parent portion.”

Financial Aid Assistant Director, Roman Silva said the office offers an express lab at U-Central that helps students with the application and recommended staying advised with any updates through the student aid website.

“We do know that the Department of Education is working diligently to review and understand some of the issues that are identified,” Silva said. “So, we are advising students to visit that website and you can do so by visiting studentaid.gov. There’s a lot of great information that’s available for students.”

The last day to submit the FAFSA is June 30 but for priority consideration, students must submit by March 15. For help with the application, contact U-Central at 956-882-4026.
