On January 3rd a male faculty member reported that his personal vehicle was burglarized at his residence off campus in Harlingen, Texas. An item taken in the burglary was a University laptop computer. At this time, it is unknown if the computer contained sensitive information. A report was filed with the Harlingen Police Department for the offense.
That same day, UTRGV PD was contacted by the Weslaco Police Department and advised that a male faculty member was having suicidal ideations. Weslaco PD was initially contacted by a concerned family member. UTRGV PD checked the faculty member’s offices located on the UTRGV Edinburg and Brownsville campuses, and surrounding areas to no avail. Weslaco PD later contacted UTRGV PD and reported that the male faculty member was found deceased of an apparent suicide in rural Weslaco, TX. The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting the death investigation.
On January 8th, a female staff member reported that she saw her ex-boyfriend, a former UTRGV student, at the Performing Arts Complex. The female staff member stated that she felt uncomfortable and was afraid of her ex-boyfriend. Upon further investigation, it was learned nothing criminal occurred and the ex-boyfriend had recently graduated from UTRGV. He was issued a criminal trespass warning and left campus without incident.
